Who Can Be a Mentor?
Anyone can be a mentor as long as they have a big heart and a strong commitment to overcoming indigenous disadvantage. No matter what your job is in the organisation you can be a mentor, although you will not be able to be both the Indigenous employee's mentor and their workplace supervisor at the one time.
Mentors are volunteers from within the existing workforce who agree to support and encourage incoming indigenous workers on a one-on-one basis. To be a mentor you will need a solid understanding of your work practices and the culture of your workplace.
There are a range of personal attributes that will assist you in achieving successful mentoring outcomes, such as:
-
Heart and a passion for making a difference,
-
Empathy,
-
Willingness to share knowledge and experience,
-
Openness and flexibility
-
An ability to relate well to others.
In other words, with the right attitude just about anyone can be a mentor.
Being a mentor is a big compliment. It is recognition that your knowledge and skills can help new employees.
